At Home Montessori Monday!

Food preparation is an essential practical life skill that students can utilize daily in your home to build fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and bilateral coordination.

To begin utilizing food preparation in your Montessori inspired home:
  1. Gather all utensils and food needed for preparation.
  2. Model how to properly utilize utensils and verbally walk your child(ren) through the process alongside the visual presentation.
  3. Allow your child(ren) to begin practicing preparing the food.
  4. Offer guidance and additional presentations as needed until your child(ren) can prepare the food independently.
Some snacks your child(ren) can prepare in addition to the ones shown above include:
  • Using an egg slicer to slice hardboiled eggs
  • Using a spreader to spread cream cheese, jam, or butter on bread
  • Using a wavy chopper knife to slice fruits and vegetable

At Home Montessori Monday!
From nutrition, to agriculture, to practical life skills and fine motor skills, meal time provides an endless amount of teachable moments for children of all ages.

Setting the table is a practical life skill that allows for children to practice meal time norms and etiquette and also creates the opportunity for family style dining to take place.
Family style dining is crucial for children as it allows for language development between child and caregiver, promotes food and nutrition empowerment for children as they decide what and how much of what goes on their plate, and builds fine motor skills as children practice scooping and grabbing food with various utensils.

To implement this Montessori practical life skill in your own home:

  1. Print out our placemat printable. We recommend printing on cardstock and laminating placements for an increase in durability and for easy clean up of the placemat following meal time.
  2. Allow your child to practice setting the table with you until they are able to set the table independently!

At Home Montessori!
Here is a free printable you can utilize to create one of our favorite Montessori trays in our toddler classroom.

This tray focuses on children's fine motor skills as well as their ability to recognize shapes.

To create a version of this tray at home utilizing things you probably already have, you will need to:

  1. Find an empty box to utilize. We used a tissue box and  wrapped the bottom of ours in paper to cover the label and make it look a bit cleaner!
  2. Cut a small slit in the bottom of the tissue box (Approximately 3 inches in length).
  3. Print out the shapes using our free  printable. We recommend printing on cardstock and laminating the shapes for an increase in durability!
  4. Allow your child to explore putting the shapes into the box and building their fine motor skills!
